What is a Sugar Bloom?

The Sugar Bloom movement was born out of grief. We lost our mother, Sugar, to a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer in 2022. To honor her journey and the legacy she left, we began working with the oncology teams at Florida Cancer Specialist and Cleveland Clinic to write notes to cancer patients and gift them orchids.

We give orchids because they epitomize strength, elegance, and unwavering determination. Orchids embody the spirit of cancer patients.

The oncology waiting room can be a solitary and anxiety-inducing experience. CHC aims to revolutionize this experience by ensuring patients feel acknowledged, listened to, and empowered. We know stress has the potential to fuel the growth of cancer cells, so we must focus on soothing patient's minds, bodies, and spirits.

By transforming the patient's journey, we have the power to transform their entire well-being. Compassion in demanding situations is crucial for overall health. We are firm believers in the healing power of empathy and its ability to enhance communal wellness.

How Do We Share the Blooms?

On the one-month commemoration of my mother's passing, I experienced intense anxiety and distress. However, it was a strangely familiar feeling, reminiscent of the times I sat in the waiting room, awaiting updates on my mother's health. It was on that very day that I made a decision - I had to take action to alleviate the collective pain in those spaces. I introduced my first Sugar Bloom, and since then, I haven't looked back. The stories I have encountered, both from patients and office staff, are testament to the transformative power of these blooms. They have the ability to change the narrative, infusing empathy, warmth, and love into places that are otherwise filled with pain. If stress has the potential to fuel the growth of cancer cells, then it becomes all the more crucial for us to focus on soothing the minds, bodies, and spirits of patients as they endure the waiting period for treatment.

The oncology waiting room experience can be a solitary and anxiety-inducing one. Our aim is to revolutionize this experience by ensuring that patients feel acknowledged, listened to, and empowered. We have specifically selected orchids as a symbol because they epitomize strength, elegance, and unwavering determination. Orchids truly embody the spirit of cancer patients, and it is crucial to mirror their resilience throughout their journey. By revolutionizing the patient's experience, we have the power to revolutionize their overall health. We firmly believe that kindness in challenging environments is essential for overall well-being.

Each month, we join forces with the esteemed Oncologists from the Florida Cancer Specialist and Research Center as well as the Cleveland Clinic to extend a heartfelt gesture to patients: orchids accompanied by thoughtful notes. These stunning flowers are personally delivered by the dedicated oncology teams, fostering a truly therapeutic encounter for both the patients and the healthcare providers. As the wise Booker T. Washington once said, "If you strive to better yourself, uplift someone else."

We have received feedback from both patients and healthcare professionals about the significant impact these blooms have.

On the one-month anniversary of my mom's passing, I experienced intense anxiety and distress. It was a strangely familiar feeling, reminiscent of the times I sat in the waiting room, awaiting updates on her health. I wondered if there was something I could do to help alleviate the pain and suffering of others who were on a cancer journey. Later that day, I asked my mom's oncologist if I could bring in an orchid and a letter of encouragement for a patient in memory of my mom. That act of giving made me feel better, so I kept doing it. As the months went by, I began to hear from recipients via e-mail telling me how much they loved the flowers and how they felt encouraged to know someone they had never met was thinking of them. We turned a gesture into a movement, and the Sugar Bloom Foundation was born.
